Question Bright colours not possible?

Hi

When I try to dye clothing, then even if it is white to start off with, the dye is very ... dull ... am I doing something wrong or is it just not possible to get a strong/ bright colour when dying?

Depends on what dyes you are using, on the other hand there probably is a reason for the dyes to be somewhat subtle.

yes, I agree with subtle, but i.e. I have a white (cosmetic) dress that I wanted to dye olivegreen... but it just comes out a very washed, translucent colour, not olive as on other clothing...

Different items dye in different ways. You have to experiment with many different pieces to get the exact colour you want. For instance - apply white dye to different types of boots. You'll get different results.

I'm assuming you mean the Elf Queen dress from the store. That does dye strangely - but I'm assuming it has a white pattern woven into the cloth. So, when you dye it, you get a mix of white and whatever colour you've applied.
